| A very aggressive tackler with a nose for the ball, Matthews enjoyed a very productive collegiate career at USC. He's adept at blitzing and getting to the quarterback and maintains adequate balance and push around the edge as a rusher, which starts with his quick first step. Clay also comes from solid NFL pedigree as his dad (Clay Matthews Sr.) was a long time NFL linebacker. Matthews is a bit undersized to play defensive end in a 3-4 scheme, but he has the football intelligence and skill to stand up and play rush outside linebacker. Given his frame, Matthews runs extremely well and uses his speed and fluid instincts to establish excellent technique in all phases of the game. He needs to improve on his coverage skills and could stand to be more fluid downfield when pivoting. He's got sideline-to-sideline play-making ability, however, and shows the natural instincts and hunger for the game that coaches love. He didn't fully reach his potential at USC either, so his upside and room for growth at the next level make him an enticing fit for any team. |
